In its initial planning phase, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland
forecasted that by 2010, it would be processing one million
barrels of oil per day. The AIH actually reached that target in 2004.
With a multi-billion dollar expansion plan now in place,
its new goal is to process more than three million barrels
of oil per day by 2016.
The major corporate activities in the AIH focus mainly
on the processing of bitumen from the oil sands
of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas.
Several corporations have announced they are investing
$50 billion in the area.
The Provincial Government sees a potential investment
of up to $130 billion in the area.
• Imperial Oil processes 187,000 barrels per day (bpd).
• BA Energy processes 77,500 barrels per day (bpd) with plans to expand processing to 250,000 barrels per day (bpd).
• Northwest Upgrading a Calgary-based private company, is investing $4.2 billion to build an upgrader that will process over 230,000 barrels per day (bpd). Phase I is planned for 2011 followed by Phase II and III in 2015.
• Shell alone, with its $27 billion investment at Scotford, will increase capacity from 155,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) after the expansion is complete.
• Total E&P plans for a 200,000 barrel/day bitumen upgrader are underway - ERCB hearing scheduled on February 24, 2010 financial review to be conducted by company before commencement of project. |
