The Alberta Industrial Heartland

Alberta's Industrial Heartland region is over 78,550 acres (317 square kilometres or about 122 square miles) in size, and is located within Metro Edmonton, Alberta's Capital Region.

The Heartland is a proven, productive environment for large and mid-size manufacturing industries… a world class industrial centre boasting investments of over $25 billion in petroleum, petrochemical and chemical processing facilities to date.

Since 1958, over 30 companies have chosen to join other world-renowned industrial corporations like Dow Chemical, Shell, Imperial Oil, BP Amoco, Agrium, Sherritt International, Praxair, Air Liquide and Chevron in locating to the Heartland.

The Alberta Industrial Heartland ( AIH )

The AIH is the nation’s largest processing centre for the petroleum, petrochemical and chemical industries.

In its initial planning phase, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland forecasted that by 2010, it would be processing one million barrels of oil per day. The AIH actually reached that target in 2004. With a multi-billion dollar expansion plan now in place, its new goal is to process more than three million barrels of oil per day by 2016.

The major corporate activities in the AIH focus mainly on the processing of bitumen from the oil sands of Fort McMurray and surrounding areas. Several corporations have announced they are investing $50 billion in the area. The Provincial Government sees a potential investment of up to $130 billion in the area.

Key development and processing activities from some of the Heartlands biggest corporations

Imperial Oil processes 187,000 barrels per day (bpd).

BA Energy processes 77,500 barrels per day (bpd) with plans to expand processing to 250,000 barrels per day (bpd).

Northwest Upgrading a Calgary-based private company, is investing $4.2 billion to build an upgrader that will process over 230,000 barrels per day (bpd). Phase I is planned for 2011 followed by Phase II and III in 2015.

Shell alone, with its $27 billion investment at Scotford, will increase capacity from 155,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 400,000 barrels per day (bpd) after the expansion is complete.

Total E&P plans for a 200,000 barrel/day bitumen upgrader are underway - ERCB hearing scheduled on February 24, 2010 financial review to be conducted by company before commencement of project.

An Urgent Response

In response to increasing industry demand, Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) has acquired 26km of right of way that will allow for the development of direct rail services to the region. Investing $15 million in new infrastructure, CPR is addressing the need to handle the increased amount of construction materials, including shipments that will go directly to the Upgraders.
